Artist Statement: The subject of my artwork is a turtle. The title I chose for my zentangle is Shell because it is the turtle’s protection as well as nature’s artwork. Elements that are obvious in my work are patterns, shape, line and value My artwork is made out of merely sharpie pen and paper. Techniques used were zentangles (swirl, waves, etc.). I first drew the outline of my turtle and the shell’s pattern before filling it in with zentangle. The inspiration behind my work is a stuffed turtle that I’ve had for years. My artwork expresses my love for turtle, both the stuffed versions and the living versions. I was trying to show and emphasize the beauty of their shells. My goal as an artist is to be able to relax more when I’m creating art and this project helped because drawing zentangles is relaxing. I learned that even though something looks difficult, it becomes simple when you break it down. Some zentangle patterns seemed complicated until I saw them broken down into steps. One of the zentangle theories state that you should not have a preconceived notion of what you want your end product to look like therefore I didn’t have a set idea of what I wanted it to look like. Nevertheless I was happy with the end product.
